If you were playing a game of Password (one of my favorites) and the password was “Cork,” what would be your hint words? Wine? Drinking? Wedges? Sandals? Perhaps the last two options wouldn’t be the obvious choices to give your partner a good shot at guessing the password, but you certainly wouldn’t be far off. Cork has now breeched the pigeonhole of being used strictly as an alcoholic stopper. Instead, it's become the IT material for footwear this Spring and Summer. And while you probably wouldn’t want to stop and smell your cork bottom sandals as you would a wine bottle cork, (that would be very risky considering some people do not clean up after their dogs on the street,) I can safely say that if you are without cork footwear next season, just stay home.
Cork is being used by designers in a multitude of ways to make sure all consumer bases are covered. A naturally occurring element from Portugal, Spain, and North Africa, cork oak tree bark is providing us with a beautiful, lightweight, material that can be colored, metallicized, laminated, and beyond. No wonder it is the go-to choice for so many brands both high end and affordable for the coming warm weather seasons. I have scoured the stores and the internet in search of some of the best cork footwear options for both young and old, rich and…trying not to be totally broke while still looking fab (we are a LARGE group.) There are infinite choices so good luck choosing and…Happy Shopping!
